Breast augmentation is defined as the surgical procedure whereby there is increase of size of breasts. It is a procedure that involves placing implants under the tissues of breasts or under chest muscles. Women usually consider it for a number of reasons. There is use of general anesthetic, which means the patient will be asleep during treatment. There are however instances in which the patient is awake, which is when local anesthesia is used.

There are various types of incisions and the type used will depend on various factors. These include enlargement level and anatomy of the patient. It will also depend on what implants are used and preference of the surgeon or patient. After selection of incision type, there is placement of the implants. This is done either through sub mammary or sub muscular placement. The former is placed behind breast tissues while the latter is placed under pectoral muscles.

The closing of the incisions is done using layered sutures and in some cases stitches. In order to ensure they are closed, there could be use of skin adhesive or surgical tape. In the early stages, the incision lines are visible. They fade away over time. There is swelling that is experienced after surgery but it disappears after two weeks. It is at that time that a patient can assess whether they had their expectations met.

As the anesthetic wears off, patients are supposed to be given painkillers for management of pain. Patients are advised to make arrangement for transport home because they are not able to effectively drive immediately after. Sutures are supposed to disappear in about 6 weeks. If sutures used do not dissolve, there will be follow-up appointment to have them removed.

Just as is the case with surgical procedures, there are risks that one should expect. In the first place, one might need to go for another surgery after 2or three years. For some patients, surgery is needed to have the implants removed.
