Essential Details In Knowing The Worth Of Reclaimed Siding

By Richard Stewart

Reclaimed materials are what you called to those that have been previously used in a building or project and is being used again for a future one. They could be refinished, altered or changed in size and the original form remains but not reprocessed. Those that have in any way been reprocessed are considered as recycled materials.

Sidings are applied to the exterior walls for protection from weather, water and adding aesthetics to the house. These things could be reused for different purposes and are called reclaimed siding and usually came from barns and are made out of wood. Here are some things to know about when selling or buying them.

You have to know the species of your wood because it is one way of determining its value. There are those which are inherently valuable due to their species being rare and unavailable in the market today because of old age and not used as much anymore. If its age is less than two decades and they are common in the market today then they are not worth much.

Their dimensions are essential parts to consider as those larger timbers sells for more than those smaller ones. The reason for this the possibility of them being sawed into boards that are wider and longer more other advantages. Although beams are more expensive than boards because of their thickness plus the more possibilities for it.

Their condition must be top notch to have the highest price possible and they must not be damaged. Having rotten pockets, large checks and extensive damage from insects will also lower how much its worth. Other things that lowers its value are metal objects such as nails and screws that can be found in it.

Dry woods protected from natural elements properly have more value than those that are not and are either rotted or waterlogged. If you happen to own antique timbers or boards, place them indoors or put covers on them. It is also helpful to place a stick between them so they will be separated allowing circulation of air.

Having a large number of them would be very helpful specially to those people looking to buy them in bulk if given a chance. This is specially true when they are all of high quality making the possibility of its worth to be more. Their reasons in buying in bulk is that handling and shipping is expensive for these heavy and large products so getting all they need at once is better.

You could also increase its value more if you can arrange them properly where it can be easily reached. This is because the handling and shipping cost will be reduced because of the arrangement they have. Piling them up haphazardly and making them harder to reach will cheapen them because it requires more time in organizing them for shipment.

Ring density is also one way in checking how valuable they really are and those that are very close are more expensive. Wider growth rings are a sign of them growing fast and are not that valuable. It is important to know these things so check them when buying or selling reclaimed wood.
