Sometimes machines may want to drill holes through stainless steel products. Due to the weak strength of the tips, they may fail to drill holes or even just break down. Tungsten carbide coatings provide a solution to all this. They have a density twice as much as stainless steel which ensures that the machines are effective in drilling the holes.

The coatings normally have a high tensile strength due to its bond in its formation as a compound. It is applied in mining where it is coated outside so that it can wear out first in the drilling. The coated drill normally has button inserts which ensure it has a ragged surface to be effective in drilling. The inserts ensure the drills have a high grasping power and do not lose grip on their surface.

Automobiles have their tires designed with studs to improve traction on slippery surfaces like ice and even roads. It is coated on the studs since it does not wear out easily. This is also included in snowmobiles which have to pass on hard surfaces like crossing roads and other abrasive surfaces. They improve traction here too especially on ice but mainly ensure the studs do not wear out fast.

Due to a high performance, they are used to coat instruments meant for various types of surgery like open surgery and laparoscopic surgery. The only disadvantage they have is they require delicate handling and are actually costlier than their stainless steel counterparts.

A coating of jewelry make them scratch resistant and extremely hard which make the jewelry long lasting especially now that they are not prone to scratches. The hardness means in special considerations it can break the jewelry using locking pliers as to normal metals which just bend flat. This is very useful in emergencies where a jewelry is to be removed immediately in life saving techniques or in first aid where the owner is choking or swollen due to the jewelry.

Dimensional meteorology discipline employs the use of certain blocks called gauge blocks. This type of blocks is used as a system for producing precision lengths. The blocks are usually made out of tungsten carbide. To produce the rotating ball of ballpoint pens which disperse ink during writing people use the same material. This compound is coated on the tips of the same pen to make it effective.

Tungsten carbide coats have been an interesting one as recently they were tested chemically. The results proved evidence that it had similar characteristics to a metal called platinum. It can catalyze some experiments one of them being water production from its constituents hydrogen and oxygen. It also catalyzes the reduction of tungsten trioxide in water presence by reduction of water.

Agricultural machines are usually coated with such products especially the wearing parts. This is due to the slow wearing out of this coating which can only be compared to only industrial diamond. It has actually surpassed treated steel by more an average of around six times by being more durable. It is used to protect the machine shape and design of the part while ensuring its long lasting and increased performance with less downtime.
