Here Is Information On Chicago Asbestos

By Jessica Cox

Asbestos are mineral substances that are naturally occurring and can be pulled into a soft consistency. The mineral is made of soft and flexible fibers which are resistant to electricity, chemical corrosion, and heat. This means that the mineral is a good insulator in its natural form. This material is used in the manufacture of cloth, cement, paper and other materials by mixing it into the materials. Here are facts regarding Chicago Asbestos.

The ability to resist corrosion and damage by electricity and heat together with the ability to make various materials stronger make this substance useful in many applications. In fact, it used to be used a lot in the construction industry too. Unfortunately, the same qualities that make asbestos important also make it very dangerous to human health. As such, its use has been banned in many countries of the world.

Ironically, in the United States a ban has not been implemented, with any attempts made in that direction countered strongly from business interests. Inclusion of the material in any domestically manufactured product is still legal. One restriction is that the percentage content in a product must not exceed one percent.

The regulation regarding the percentage of the mineral that can be used in products only came into effect a few years ago. That means that products and buildings that were constructed before the restrictions came into effect still contain huge amounts of the mineral. Other countries that still use the mineral in large amounts and for industrial as well as commercial and residential applications are India and China.

As stated earlier on, the mineral is a chemical hazard to human health. The mineral forms microscopic fibres in the air that cannot be detected by the naked eye. On the same note, they can neither be smelled nor tasted, making them hard to discover. Once inhaled, they sediment in the body, mostly inside lungs without showing any immediate health effects. Due to this, it is extremely hard to detect if one has inhaled the fibres.

The fibers cannot be eliminated from the body system once they get in because they do not dissolve. The effect of the fibers start being felt after several years. According to research, they result to inflammation and scarring. They can also result to genetic damage to the body cells.

According to research, diseases that are as a result of inhaling asbestos develop for about 20 to 50 years. This means that in the Unites States, most people diagnosed with this condition are a result of exposure to the product before restrictions were put in place. On the other hand, with these restrictions in place, such cases are expected to drop.

Asbestos is hazardous when consumed or inhaled in any amount. Even the smallest exposure is also known to cause various conditions. Nevertheless, the greatest threat is caused by exposure to high doses of the microscopic fibres. Another threat is posed by frequent exposure to small amounts. At the cellular level, any damage caused is non-reversible by any medical means.
