The Important Of Hydro Testing

By Daniel Miller

Almost everyone has encountered a pressure vessel in their life, although some people don't know them by this name. They come in many forms and sizes, and are used for a number of different things in people's houses and businesses. Things like plumbing, pipelines, gas tanks, and boilers all need to be check with hydro testing in order to keep family member and employees safe, and for the container or pipeline to work properly.

Before standardized tests were used to test the durability and safety of these kinds of pipes and containers, many people were killed in terrible accidents that could have been prevented. Now not only are the vessels built more safely, but they are also tested more precisely and regularly. This is very important since the liquids or gasses inside can often be very harmful or fatal to people.

Since one of the main goals of this test is to see if there are any leaks in the vessel occurring, it is often just called a leak test. This also provides a way to find out where the problem is happening. Hydrostatic pressure tests are also important to examine the general functionality and durability of the pressure vessel.

While this test requires trained professionals and specialized equipment, the process is not very hard to understand. The container or pipeline is filled with a liquid or a gas, most commonly water, through its supply valve. Once it reaches the designated pressure for the test, the valve is shut off; if any pressure is lost, it means that there is a leak somewhere.

The way that the location of a leak is identified is by using some kind of coloration in the medium being used. With water, it is very easy to do this by simply putting a dye in the water and observing to see which direction the water is flowing. Once the area of the leak is determined, it is much easier to see how the problem can be fixed or if the whole thing needs to be replaced.

Because of the safety concerns with these types of pipes and pressurized vessels, they all undergo this kind of test after being manufactured before they go out to consumers. It is also important to check up on these containers as the years go by because they can sometimes wear down and have problems. The modified hydrostatic test or proof pressure test is often what is used then.

Customers will often get to choose which medium they would like to use for their system's test, but professionals will most often recommend water depending on what type of pressure vessel it is. This is because water works best for most of these, and is by far the least expensive. Oil is costly, and air requires special equipment in order to set up a test for it.

It is necessary to make sure that a container will be safe even if it goes above its recommended pressure. It also brings the user peace of mind if a test has gone above and beyond the necessary capabilities. When carrying out this kind of test, the professional will usually ask for the normal working pressure of the pipe or container, then add a percentage of its pressure on for the test.
