Aspects To Take Into Consideration When Practicing Golf Course Irrigation

By David Ellis

The landscape determines how good the golf field is while the green attract most of the players during the game, because of this proper care than in trees, fairways and other parts. The arena condition effect the success of the golf facilities. To make all these possible the field is maintained using water, most specifically in dry and hot months when plants dries out because they lose more water during respiration. For maintenance of plants in good condition golf course irrigation takes place.

Watering systems are made in a way that they will be able to distribute water evenly for conservation and protection of water resource. The model chosen must meet all these requirements. Unique site characteristics including the soil type must be part of the design.

Irrigation should consider soil types, turf species, and areas of irrigation. The soil type dictates the amount of water to be used to replenish water in the roots. Site aspects for example sun, hill, degree of shade, hills and slopes dictate the amount of water to be used. In areas which are exposed to wind the rate of transpiration is high hence more water loss from plants by transpiration such areas require more water.

The choice of watering method vary according to plant type and surface watered. Methods used are sprinkler and piping. The machinery should provide big volume of liquid for minimal time which is not beyond soil rates of infiltration which can cause runoff. This method should be effective and efficient in using the liquid.

The process of sprinkling using head method results to watering of region closest the head and leave out region far out and due to this a run off occurs. To correct these two rows are applied or watering manually to regions which are not wet for example extended rough and the fairway. Different designs are presented which posses two nozzles for example front and back. This provides flexibility and uniform distribution.

Sprinklers are not used in the green. The sprinklers are placed around at a set spacing they placed at a spacing of 70 feet and through about 74 feet this is to make sure the whole area is sprinkled evenly. To determine proper sprinkler spacing for a green one can use a distribution uniformity on a computer which present how sprinkler distribution of water in a radius. The watering is more complex because the green has very low height that is grown near the ground.

The watering system must in right working condition. To make sure this is happening auditing process is carried out to ensure proper working of the system with cost effectiveness. Performance can be evaluated using these procedures: scheduling coefficient, coefficient of uniformity and distribution uniform of the lowest quartile. Auditors carry out the process.

If one want to choose the machinery for watering including a sprinkler it will be wise to know the volume of solvent it conveys and its pressure. Pressure should be between 80psi and 65 psi. The radius and the water volume should be included in the manufacturing instructions. What is remaining is to determine the method to operate the machinery for adequate liquid amounts.
