Points To Consider While Purchasing A Rotary Shaft Seal

By Betty Edwards

For mechanical equipment to operate at their best, there should be a lubrication system, so the internal components do not corrode. Additionally, there has been an increased awareness about the Rotary Shaft Seal in particular and its ability to regulate leakage of the lubricating medium. Usually, the seal is fitted between a rotating shaft and a non-stationery casing.

In the markets, the product is available in an array of profiles. Others have encroached the market, but the standard design is the TC model. A lot of these items are manufactured with a pre-energized lip that and may or may not be available inclusive of a secondary non-spring lip. Some are designed with two spring lips while others may lack these features at all.

There is more. Mechanical pump seals can also be classified depending on their application. For instance, there are some used in the automotive industry, and it is not uncommon to see a bearing seal in a trailer. Others are specifically modeled to endure high temperatures and pressure. Depending on the rotation of the shaft, some profiles are regarded as directional, bi-directional and non-directional. Other manufacturers fit an enclosed rubber component, either reinforced or non-reinforced.

Regardless of the profile, one thing that these products have in common is that they are all used with a pumping medium or fluid. The entire kit features two main components. They include a stationary enclosure and rotating shaft. Without these pump seals, there would be gross leakages of the lubrication medium, which in turn leads to extra costs. Due to its design, they are also known as water pump or mechanical shaft seal.

Technically referred to as end-face rotary shaft seal, these pump seals were designed during the early years of the twentieth century, but their prominence started gaining ground during the post-war era in the forties. It steadily and gradually became a household equipment and as valuable as such to industrialists. Some elements that make the product so unique include the stationary and rotating component, spring, gland plate and clamp ring.

Prior to its discovery, people highly relied on gland packing, while others made use of mechanical packings. Principally, their design was top notch but has one major shortcoming. They hardly regulated leakages to the required extent, and that led to unpopularity. The shaft seal used today is efficient in controlling leakages, preventing corrosion, and that enhances their performance and durability.

Some factors that you need to have at your fingertips while purchasing the product include the durability of the equipment. The shaft seals cost money and therefore, it is only economical to find a shaft that is highly durable. Preferably, find one that has a manufacturer's warranty, for it signals that the seal of the required standard quality.

Another thing that you need to pay close attention to is the nature of lubricating medium you intend to use it for. Astonishingly, some seals use semi-solid media, although the widely used usually seal oil. Therefore, before you make the absolute choice to buy, consider the fluid too.
